10 EASY TIPS TO OVERCOME STRESS

Many people believe that the world is becoming increasingly stressful. Indeed, it seems the rapid changes in the world have had a strong impact on social systems and the individuals they comprise. 

Death of loved ones, divorce, marital separation, fired at work, change in health of a family member, business readjustment and even positive event such as pregnancy, Christmas or begin or end of school are some of the life events that plunge one into stress.

These changes are inevitable or never decreasing and thus, there arises the need to manage its associated stress.

Simple steps to help one overcome stress include
  • Exercise: This releases endorphin which are natural opiates that help relieve physical and psychological pain.
  • Relaxation Methods: Meditation, fantasizing (about pleasant things), deep breathing exercises, listening to music, watching nice movies and walking around.
  • Making Affirmations: That is encouraging yourself and telling yourself positive things such as 'I can do it'
  • Thought Stopping: Consciously stopping yourself from thinking about painful and disturbing things.
  • Letting Go: Do not hold up thoughts against people. Just forget it.
  • Be Assertive: Be yourself. Do not please others at your own detriments. Be honest with yourself. Speak your mind.
  • Be Decisive: Go straight to the point! Decide whether it's 'urgent and important' or 'urgent and not important' or 'important and not urgent'. You should be able to identify them and decide well.
  • Acting out positively: This may include writing a letter to the offender and then burning it; or replacing the offending person with an object and privately speaking your mind to it or doing some physical activity like playing a game etc.
  • Laughter and or creating humor
  • Proper time management
